Getting Started with Football Stats
Football statistics can seem overwhelming at first, but understanding a few key metrics will dramatically improve your ability to evaluate teams and predict match outcomes.
Win Rate
The simplest metric: percentage of matches won. A win rate above 60% indicates a strong team, 40-60% is average, and below 40% suggests struggles. Always consider sample size and opponent quality.
Goals Per Match
Goals scored per match measures attacking output. The Premier League average is around 1.5 goals per team per match. Teams above 2.0 are elite attackers; below 1.0 indicates attacking problems.
Clean Sheet Percentage
The percentage of matches where a team concedes zero goals. Above 40% is elite defensive performance, 25-40% is solid, below 25% indicates defensive vulnerabilities.
Goal Difference
Goals scored minus goals conceded. Positive goal difference indicates overall quality. The larger the positive difference, the more dominant the team.
Putting It All Together
No single stat tells the full story. The best analysis combines multiple metrics: a team with 65% win rate, 2.1 goals per match, and 35% clean sheets is clearly excellent across all phases.
