What Is xG (Expected Goals)?
Expected Goals (xG) is a statistical metric that measures the quality of goal-scoring chances in football. Each shot is assigned a probability value between 0 and 1, representing the likelihood of that shot resulting in a goal based on historical data from thousands of similar situations.
How Is xG Calculated?
xG is calculated by analyzing multiple factors for each shot: distance from goal, angle to goal, body part used (foot, head), type of assist (through ball, cross, set piece), number of defenders between the shooter and goal, and whether it was a one-on-one situation. Machine learning models trained on hundreds of thousands of shots produce the probability.
Why Does xG Matter?
xG helps separate luck from skill. A team consistently outperforming their xG might have an exceptional finisher, while a team underperforming might be unlucky or have poor finishing. Over time, actual goals tend to regress toward xG values, making it a powerful predictive tool.
xG in Team Comparison
When comparing two teams, xG difference (xG scored minus xG conceded) is one of the strongest indicators of true team quality. A team with high xG but low actual goals is likely to improve, while a team scoring far above their xG may regress.
Limitations of xG
xG does not account for individual player quality, team tactics that create better finishing positions, or goalkeeper quality. It is best used alongside other metrics rather than in isolation.
