What Is Field Tilt in Football?

Learn about Field Tilt in football analytics - a metric showing territorial dominance and how much a team controls the attacking third.

What Is Field Tilt?

Field Tilt measures the percentage of total touches in the attacking third that belong to a team. If Team A has 70% field tilt, it means 70% of all touches in both attacking thirds occurred in Team A's attacking third.

Field Tilt vs Possession

While possession measures total ball control, Field Tilt specifically measures WHERE the ball is controlled. A team can have 50% possession but 65% field tilt if they dominate the attacking third while the opponent circulates in their own half.

Why Field Tilt Matters

Field Tilt correlates strongly with chance creation and expected goals. Teams with consistently high field tilt create more shots, more xG, and typically score more goals.

Field Tilt in Team Comparison

When comparing teams, field tilt reveals which team is more likely to dominate territorially. This is especially useful for predicting match dynamics and goal-scoring patterns.
