What Is PPDA in Football?

Understand PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) in football - a key pressing metric that reveals how aggressively teams press opponents.

What Is PPDA?

PPDA stands for Passes Per Defensive Action. It measures how many passes a team allows the opposition to make before making a defensive action (tackle, interception, or foul) in the attacking third.

How to Interpret PPDA

A lower PPDA means more aggressive pressing - the team wins the ball back quickly. A higher PPDA indicates a team that sits deeper and allows opponents more time on the ball. Top pressing teams like Liverpool or Bayer Leverkusen typically have PPDA values below 8.

PPDA and Playing Style

PPDA reveals tactical identity. Teams with low PPDA (5-8) play high-press football. Teams with medium PPDA (8-12) use selective pressing. Teams with high PPDA (12+) prefer a low block defensive approach.

Limitations of PPDA

PPDA does not measure pressing effectiveness - only intensity. A team can press aggressively (low PPDA) but still concede if the press is easily bypassed. It should be combined with other metrics.

PPDA in Match Analysis

Comparing PPDA between two teams before a match can indicate tactical matchups. A high-pressing team vs a team that struggles under pressure creates a clear advantage scenario.
